NGK INSULATORS LTD. started
the development of NOx sensor to be used in automotive and
heavy duty diesel applications in 1993.
In order to realise the NOx sensor concept, NGK used proven
Thick Film ZrO2 Technology. NGK was the first manufacturer
in the world to apply this technology in oxygen sensors
starting in 1987. This technology has already been proven.
The actual type of the Smart NOx sensor was developed in
co-operation with SiemensVDO Automotive. NGK INSULATORS
LTD. provides the NOx sensor, Siemens VDO provides the control
electronics.
The SMART NOx SENSOR offers:
- NOx
trap or SCR catalyst control
- Engine
control
- NOx
OBD
as
potential applications for compliance of tighter emission
regulations.

(Thick Film ZrO2 NOx Sensor with In-Connector Electronics)
Utilizing
specialilzed ZRO2 thick film technology, NGK has developed
a new NOx SENSOR which can be directly installed in
exhaust gas stream of a combusion engine, and can measure
NOx components with less interference effect of other
gas components. A SMART NOx SENSOR is a stand a lone
sensor for ECU, with an integrated in-connector control
electronics.
